CHS Family and Consumer Sciences Course Offerings

 Family & Consumer Sciences I
This comprehensive course is designed for 9th through 11th grade students.  Areas taught include:  nutrition and foods, consumer education, clothing and textiles, child development, personal development or improvement, and housing.  There are no prerequisites for this course.  However, during the course laboratory experiences are required.

 Adult Responsibilities/ Family Life Education
Each is a one-semester course.  Areas taught include:  influence of society, economic conditions, personal values, goals, decision-making skills, individual and family management, financial resource management including consumer education, interpersonal skills and family relationships, parenting responsibilities and competencies for securing and holding jobs and establishing careers.  There are no prerequisites.  However, it is recommended that a student completes Family & Consumer Sciences I before scheduling Adult Responsibilities/Family Life Education.
 Child Development / Parenthood Education

Each is one-semester course open to all students in grades 10-12.  However, it is more relevant to 11th and 12th graders.  Recent research suggests that many parents may lack the knowledge and skills to fulfill parenting roles.  Without a clear understanding of children and their development, many people become frustrated and are dissatisfied with their relationships toward children.
The purpose of this course is to prepare students in two general areas:  (1) to be effective in their personal relationships with children, and (2) to prepare students for an expanding job market as child care workers.  Child development students will work in class for four days and travel to Cecilia Primary once a week to assist the kindergarten teachers.  They will be expected to tutor students, prepare bulletin boards, read books, etc.  They will apply concepts learned in the classroom by dealing with "real" children and "real" situations.
Clothing and Textiles/Advanced Clothing and Textiles
This is primarily a "lab" based course.  Students will be expected to sew four out of five days a week.  At least a little previous experience in sewing is recommended.  Lecture and written tests are also part of clothing.  Students will study the social-psychological aspects of clothing, affects, on personal appearance, textiles, economic aspects, clothing care as well as careers in clothing and textiles.  (NOTE:  Students will be expected to pay for fabrics and supplies needed for sewing projects.  Estimated cost for sewing supplies/fabric is $35 per course.)
Nutrition and Food - Adv. Nutrition & Food
Each is a one-semester course recommended for students in grade 10-12.  Each carries one-half credit and has no prerequisite.  It includes instruction in relationship of nutrition to health and well-being; functions and sources of nutrients; calorie requirements; USDA daily food guide, nutrition labeling; food habits; food fads and meals; and optional use of the food dollar.  Food laboratory experiences are required and lab fees are assessed to help to cover the costs of preparing meals in the food lab.
 Pro-Start I / Pro-Start II
This is an internship that focuses on preparing students for the food service and hospitality industry.  A student must be 16 yrs. of age or older and have a career interest in food service management.  Pro-Start I is taken during the spring semester of a student's junior year.  Pro-Start II is taken during the fall semester of a student's senior year.  Prerequisite: C or better average in Foods and Nutrition.  NOTE: See Ms. Sharon Courville in family & consumer sciences department for more information on this program.
