LA Core 4 Curriculum

The LA Core 4 Curriculum is one of the recommendations of the members of the High School Redesign Commissioners. It was designed to graduate students from our high schools that are more prepared to be successful in the real world.

The LA Core 4 Curriculum begins with the freshmen class of 2008-2009. All ninth graders of the freshmen class of 2008-2009 will be enrolled in the LA. Core  4 Curriculum. Students will have to pass four academic subjects in each of the following areas: English, Math, Science, and Social Studies. Descriptions of the courses that are required can be obtained from the guidance department of each high school or at the Louisiana Dept. of  Education’s Website. The website is www.louisianaschools.net.

After a student has attended high school for two years, as determined by the school, the student, the student’s parent, guardian, or custodian may request that the student be exempt from completing the LA Core 4 Curriculum. When the student turns 18 years of age or older and has attended high school for at least two years can request to be exempt from the curriculum.

Once the meeting with school officials to discuss the student’s progress is completed, the parent,
guardian, or custodian can sign a statement acknowledging their consent to the student graduating without completing the Louisiana Core 4 Curriculum. The student will not be allowed to attend a Louisiana four year public college or university.

Students that opt out of the LA Core 4 Curriculum will follow the Regular Diploma track or the Career Diploma track which  is less rigorous. The classes that are in the regular or career diploma track can also be found with the counselors or the state department website.
